PRelude to PRSSA

Mitch Blog Photo .jpgThe Public Relations Student Society of America is a mouthful. That’s why we go by PRSSA for short. But we are more than just a fancy name.   Below is a comprehensive overview of the organization and all it has to offer.

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to follow our Twitter and Facebook pages. From there we can exchange contact information. Once we start talking, if it feels like a special connection, we can even have a THING together!

Before we jump into anything serious, you probably want to do a little “creeping” to find out more about us. Totally understandable. This blog is meant to welcome everyone back, and hopefully answer some questions old and new members alike might have.

Who are these guys?

We are a pre-professional student organization, and the foremost organization for students in public relations. Here, you’re part of something much bigger than just another campus club. We’re a network of more than 300 chapters and 11,000 students across the country. Our chapter is supported by our parent organization, the Public Relations Society of America.

What kind of a commitment am I making here?

The beautiful thing about this relationship is we are not stage-five clingers. Members are welcome to determine the type of commitment they have with PRSSA. Don’t sweat it if you can’t make an off-campus networking event because you’re swamped with papers and projects. We do find that people who are excited about meeting new people and taking advantage of incredible opportunities get the most out of our organization. However, for the curious — yet shy– student, there is still a place for you in our hearts. Come out and listen to industry professionals speak about working in the real world, take their business cards and gain valuable industry insight. You have the chance to be as involved as you want.

When and where are the dates?

Well, I can assure you there will be no ‘Netflix and Chill’. Sorry. We meet on Tuesdays, bi-weekly, in the Communication Arts & Sciences building at 7 p.m. in Room 161. In the past we have done off-campus meetings and professional development events. These include, but are not limited to, social mixers at Harper’s (free food), firm tours at various Michigan PR agencies, cross fit training, fundraising events, career fairs, award ceremonies and conferences with influential professionals to learn from and network with.

Why should I say yes?

PRSSA membership offers internship listings, competitions, and chapter and national leadership opportunities, scholarships, leadership awards and publications, news and social media to keep you updated on industry trends.

Our chapter offers the unique opportunities of contributing to the blog you are reading right now. Get yourself published online. Share your work with family, friends, and future employers.

Stand out, build your resume, and get a head start on your career as a PRSSA member.

The Michigan State PRSSA chapter is made up of Spartan #PRStars. You can be one too. We would make a great couple!
