As a freshman coming into Michigan State University, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for my education. I had a plan. I thought I knew exactly what the next four years were going to look like. Boy, was I wrong!
I am a journalism student here at Michigan State, and I truly love it! The atmosphere at the Communication Arts and Sciences building is so positive and welcoming, and I really feel like I have found my place there. I knew that I wanted to study journalism when I came to Michigan State, so everything about the major fascinates me. In the fall of this year, I thought that I was a true freshman like all of my peers, but it was not until I went to my advisor that I figured out that I was technically a sophomore! In fact, I could graduate in three years if I took all of the right classes in the perfect sequence. It was here, in my advisor’s office, that I figured out I wanted to pursue the public relations minor.
Funnily enough, I did not even know that a public relations minor was offered at Michigan State until I met with my very knowledgeable advisor. We talked about how I was at sophomore status and that I had the opportunity to graduate an entire year early, which was amazing to hear! I explained to her that I felt like I should have something under my belt that would give me an edge over other journalism students when it came down to applying for internships and jobs later on in my career. We talked about possible minors that would be a good fit for me, and the public relations minor really stuck with me. It was the perfect fit for many reasons, one of them being that I am very sociable, and I love connecting with others!
The minor fits in perfectly with my schedule of classes, and I can still graduate a year early! I will graduate in 2020 with a BA of journalism and a minor in public relations, and I am so excited, even if it is three years away! I am currently taking my first public relations class this semester, and I am really enjoying it. It is a beginner class to the public relations profession, but I know that I will learn many things that will prove to be beneficial while I am in higher level classes!
I applied for Hubbell Connections because I knew that I wanted to expand my knowledge in public relations, and I wanted to gain valuable experience in the field. After only a few days of having my position, I was already working and gaining experience! I am very excited to learn more as I continue working for Hubbell, and I can’t wait to see where public relations takes me in my future!
